## Tense Rules for IELTS Writing
Abrupt, unjustified tense switching between past and present confuses examiners.
### 1. Task 1 Tense Guidelines:
- **Past Years (e.g. 2010–2020)**: Use **Past Simple** throughout (*fell, surged, accounted for*).
- **Future Projections (e.g. by 2050)**: Use **Future Modals** (*is projected to reach, is forecast to surpass*).
- **Chart Introduction**: The chart itself exists in the present (*The chart **illustrates**...*).
### 2. Task 2 Tense Guidelines:
- **General Truths / Argumentation**: Use **Present Simple** (*Education **plays** a pivotal role...*).
- **Recent Trends / Continuous Developments**: Use **Present Perfect** (*Over the last decade, AI **has transformed** employment*).
5 Common IELTS Mistakes & Side-by-Side Corrections:
Common Candidate Mistake:
"In 2010, renewable energy increases to 33% and then it dropped in 2015."
Band 8+ Correct Form:
"In 2010, renewable energy increased to 33% and then dropped in 2015."
Why: Past data must consistently use Past Simple verbs ('increased... dropped').
Common Candidate Mistake:
"Over the last decade, artificial intelligence advanced significantly."
Band 8+ Correct Form:
"Over the last decade, artificial intelligence has advanced significantly."
Why: Time expressions like 'Over the last decade' connecting the past to present require Present Perfect ('has advanced').
Common Candidate Mistake:
"The bar chart illustrated the proportion of electricity generation."
Band 8+ Correct Form:
"The bar chart illustrates the proportion of electricity generation."
Why: The visual diagram physically exists in front of the reader in the present; use Present Simple ('illustrates').
Common Candidate Mistake:
"By 2050, the population will reach to 9 billion."
Band 8+ Correct Form:
"By 2050, the population is projected to reach 9 billion."
Why: Use cautious academic projection phrasing ('is projected to reach') instead of absolute certainty.
Common Candidate Mistake:
"Since many years, people are moving to urban cities."
Band 8+ Correct Form:
"For many years, people have been moving to urban cities."
Why: Use 'for' with duration periods ('for many years') paired with Present Perfect Continuous.
