## Punctuation Rules for Band 8+ Writing
Punctuation errors (especially comma splices) pull Grammatical Accuracy down to Band 6.0.
### 1. The Comma Splice Error:
- **Incorrect**: *Tuition fees are rising, many students cannot afford university.* (Two independent clauses joined ONLY by a comma).
- **Fix A (Semicolon)**: *Tuition fees are rising; many students cannot afford university.*
- **Fix B (Semicolon + Conjunctive Adverb)**: *Tuition fees are rising; consequently, many students cannot afford university.*
- **Fix C (Subordination)**: *Because tuition fees are rising, many students cannot afford university.*
5 Common IELTS Mistakes & Side-by-Side Corrections:
Common Candidate Mistake:
"Solar power is clean, it produces zero greenhouse emissions."
Band 8+ Correct Form:
"Solar power is clean; it produces zero greenhouse emissions."
Why: A comma cannot join two full independent clauses alone (comma splice). Use a semicolon or conjunction.
Common Candidate Mistake:
"Renewable energy is expensive, however, it is essential for the future."
Band 8+ Correct Form:
"Renewable energy is expensive; however, it is essential for the future."
Why: 'however' is a conjunctive adverb, not a coordinating conjunction. Precede it with a semicolon ('; however,').
Common Candidate Mistake:
"The chart shows data for: Germany, France, and Spain."
Band 8+ Correct Form:
"The chart shows data for Germany, France, and Spain."
Why: Do not place a colon between a preposition ('for') and its object list.
Common Candidate Mistake:
"Although initial costs are high. Solar energy is sustainable."
Band 8+ Correct Form:
"Although initial costs are high, solar energy is sustainable."
Why: 'Although...' is a subordinate clause fragment that cannot stand alone as a sentence.
Common Candidate Mistake:
"Students who study abroad, they gain valuable independence."
Band 8+ Correct Form:
"Students who study abroad gain valuable independence."
Why: Do not place a comma or redundant subject pronoun ('they') after the defining relative clause.
