Never use with uncountables! 3. **Zero Article**: Use when making generalized statements with plural or uncountable nouns (*Education improves society; Cars cause traffic congestion*).

Band 8+ Correct Form:

"The government should invest more in education."

Why: 'Education' is used in a generalized, uncountable sense here and requires the zero article.
Common Candidate Mistake:

Band 8+ Correct Form:

"He gave me some useful advice about university admissions."

Why: 'Advice' is uncountable; it cannot take 'a' or 'an'. Use 'some advice' or 'a piece of advice'.
Common Candidate Mistake:

"In modern world, technology is advancing rapidly."

Band 8+ Correct Form:

"In the modern world, technology is advancing rapidly."

Why: 'The modern world' is a unique specific concept requiring the definite article 'the'.
Common Candidate Mistake:

"Proportion of elderly citizens has increased."

Band 8+ Correct Form:

"The proportion of elderly citizens has increased."

Why: 'Proportion' is a specific quantified noun requiring 'The proportion of...'.

Why: Country names that represent political unions or plurals (the UK, the USA, the Netherlands) require 'the'.
